The council's 2014 appraisal calls Woolwich Common the largest conservation area in the Royal Borough: 192 hectares, designated in May 1975 and extended in September 1991 to take in the Royal Herbert Hospital and Connaught Barracks, then again in 1996 for part of the old Brook Hospital.
Barracks, hospitals and an academy turned into flats
Much of the land is still open grass or military ground, but the appraisal says almost all the institutional buildings have changed use to housing. The first phase of the Royal Artillery Barracks went up in 1776-82, and the Royal Artillery left in 2007, to be replaced by other Army units including the King's Troop. The appraisal lists the 1780 Royal Artillery Hospital, now Connaught Mews (Artillery House, Lantern House and Nightingale House), and records that the 1851 garrison school on Green Hill became housing in 1989. At James Wyatt's Royal Military Academy of 1805-6, Durkan Homes had converted some historic blocks to flats and added new ones by the time of the appraisal.
A converted flat is likely to have a fitted kitchen of built-in appliances, often a single oven under a hob. The removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.
Social housing on the Woolwich Common Estate
The appraisal dates the Woolwich Common Estate, on the east side of Academy Road, to 1968-82. Social housing is the biggest tenure in the ward: at the 2021 Census, 43.8% of Woolwich Common's 4,648 households rented from the council or a housing association, 28.3% rented privately and 25.4% owned. Just under half (45.5%) lived in purpose-built flats and 29.3% in terraced houses.

The WB parking zone is getting bigger
Greenwich lists the Woolwich B zone (WB) as controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The council's January 2026 notice, which calls it Woolwich Common, proposed adding Sundays and bringing more streets into it, among them Ha-Ha Road, Repository Road, Nightingale Place, Herbert Place and Raglan Road, and on 14 August 2026 a cabinet member agreed that the scheme should go ahead. Read the sign at your kerb before choosing a Sunday slot. On any day the team needs somewhere to park.

Is Sunday still free to park on my road?
Perhaps not for long. Sundays were in the council's January 2026 proposal for the WB zone, the scheme was approved in August 2026, and the council's zone page still showed Monday to Saturday in October 2026, so check the sign; we work Sundays at the weekday price either way.
How long does a double oven take?
About 2 hours, against about 90 minutes for a single.
