The Grand Store at the Royal Arsenal, three brick ranges built in 1808-13 to designs attributed to James and Lewis Wyatt, has been listed Grade II* since June 1973. It was a depot for army and navy stores; today it holds flats.
Kitchens inside the Arsenal's listed buildings
Manufacturing at the Arsenal stopped in 1967 and the Ministry of Defence moved out in 1994. Berkeley says it has worked with the council on the site since 2000, with about 4,000 homes completed and 23 listed buildings refurbished and repurposed. Building 10, a Grade II former factory and warehouse, had a new 10-storey residential block of 112 homes built within its footprint, completed in July 2022.
The Census shows how unusual that is. In 2021, 495 households in Woolwich Arsenal ward (8.7%) lived in a converted building other than a house, such as a former warehouse or school. Across the whole borough only 1,668 households (1.5%) lived that way, so nearly three in ten of them were here.
Berkeley's specifications for the current Royal Arsenal Riverside blocks list integrated electric ovens with ceramic hobs, and a flat made from an old warehouse floor is likely to have a similar built-in fit-out, the oven set into a run of units. Nothing about the listing changes the clean. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Renting and shared ownership on the Arsenal
Woolwich Arsenal had the highest share of private renters of any ward in the borough at the 2021 Census, 45.5% of 5,717 households, and another 6.5% were in shared ownership. Lettings mean checkout inspections, and the oven is on the inventory clerk's list.

The figure depends on the appliance, and it is agreed on the phone before the visit: a built-in single is £77, a double £110. A ceramic hob done at the same visit is £23.
More homes on the old Crossrail site
Construction is not over. In July 2026 Berkeley said that planning consent, approved earlier this year, covers 575 homes, 35% of them affordable, on a Royal Arsenal Riverside site it provided to Crossrail and TfL in 2010 for the Woolwich station; the Elizabeth line station there opened on 24 May 2022. Only the planning. Give us the building number and floor; the oven is cleaned the same way as in a new block, with dust sheets down before anything is moved.
What happens to the racks and trays during the clean?
They come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, door glass and seals are cleaned by hand, normally in your kitchen, and the oven is put back together, heated and checked with you before the team leaves.
Can you clean the hob and the extractor too?
Yes. A ceramic hob is £23 and an extractor hood £28, each added to the oven price.
