Croydon's parks directory tells the green's story. In 1870 an agent of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners had builders dig out the plan of a church at its north-eastern end. A local resident saw it as a raid on public open space and hired workmen to fill the trenches in as fast as they were dug, and a site for the church was found elsewhere. In 1871 the land went to the Croydon Local Board of Health on condition that it be kept open for ever. Plane trees, benches and a stone trough for cattle and horses are still there, and the war memorial at one end was listed Grade II in 2017.
Terraced houses in Woodside ward
Croydon's Woodside ward is wider than the old village and runs up towards Norwood Junction, but it is still mostly houses. At the 2021 Census, 44.3% of its households lived in a terraced house, 16.7% in a semi and 23.9% in a purpose-built flat. Half (50.5%) owned their home, 26.9% rented privately and 20.8% rented from a social landlord, mostly a housing association (14.8%).

Croydon's map of its South Norwood permit zone (dated January 2011) carries a warning about Birchanger Road, which is in Woodside ward: vehicles must park inside the bay markings with two wheels on the footway, and during controlled hours must not park wholly on the carriageway. A van has to follow the same markings. Elsewhere, the council puts each zone's controlled hours on the signs where you enter it, so tell us your street and what those signs say when you book.
