The bronze Churchill on the south green went up in 1959; he was the local MP for forty years. The avenue of plane trees that now leads to him was replanted in the late 1960s along the line of poplars put in for Queen Victoria's 1887 jubilee.
The village round The Square and Johnston Road
Old maps call the place Woodford Row. By 1876 it had the parish's best shops, overlooking the green, and a handful of mansions, and All Saints, on Inmans Row, whose spire still dominates the north green, had gone up in 1874. Sir James Hawkey Hall and Broomhill Court, a brick estate of flats round its own green, were built on the cleared ground. The council of the day also refused to let trams, and later trolleybuses, into the area.

The census area that takes in The Square, Johnston Road, Broadmead Road and Broomhill Road (Redbridge 001G) had 880 households in 2021. More than half, 55.3%, lived in a purpose-built block of flats, and only 28 households had a detached house. Parking in zone WG along the High Road
On Redbridge's map, zone WG takes in the High Road by the green, The Square, Mill Lane, Johnston Road, The Terrace, Links Road and closes such as Campion Gardens and Harts Grove. Permits apply from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, so a Saturday is controlled here too. The van needs one of your visitor permits; tradespeople cannot buy their own. The Roses, further south, has its own short hours: 8am to 10am and 3pm to 5pm on weekdays. Check the signs on your own road too.

Mostly Redbridge. The borough boundary runs just west of the High Road, and the strip on that side, including the Mill House site on The Square, is Waltham Forest, which has its own Woodford Green conservation area.

Is a Sunday visit easier for parking?
