Church End: St Mary's and the Woodford Hall estate
This stretch of the High Road was the hamlet of Church End. St Mary's still stands on the site chosen in the 12th century: after the fire of 1969, digging under the church found material from the late 1100s. Its west tower is the plain red-brick one put up in the reign of Queen Anne.
Woodford Hall was being rebuilt to Thomas Leverton's design by 1771, and the house ended its days as Mrs Gladstone's convalescent home. In 1869 its last private occupier left and the British Land Company bought the estate; within a few years it had laid out roads west of the church and houses were going up on some of the plots. The hall came down around 1900, and the parish memorial hall was built on the front of its site. One older route survives as a road name: Churchfields was the footpath people from Woodford Bridge took to St Mary's before St Paul's was built in 1860.
Terraces, semis and converted flats west of the High Road
The two census areas behind the High Road here, round Chelmsford Road, Malmesbury Road and Carnarvon Road (Redbridge 007B and 007F), held 1,417 households in 2021. Of those, 411 lived in a semi, 382 in a terraced house and 174 in a converted or shared house; another 344 were in purpose-built blocks. In the Carnarvon Road area a third of households, 33.3%, rented privately.

Parking west of the High Road
On Redbridge's permit zone map, the roads round Chelmsford Road, Malmesbury Road and Carnarvon Road are outside any controlled zone. Further south, Grove Hill and Woodford Road fall in the South Woodford zone (STHWP), controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, where the van needs one of your visitor permits. The hours come from the council's map, so read the signs on the street as well.
