The village takes its name from the ford where the oldest road through the parish crossed the Roding. In 1573 the lord of the manor agreed to replace the horse bridge with one for carts; a brick bridge of three arches was built in 1771 after floods wrecked its 1768 predecessor, and the present, wider bridge went in in 1962.
The village on Chigwell Road
Woodford was never one compact village, and the hamlet here was still called "the village" by local people in 1965. Landmarks include the green and pond, the Crown and Crooked Billet, St Paul's with its Kentish ragstone spire, and Greyhound Cottage, an 18th-century weatherboarded house painted blue. Dr Barnardo's Homes took over Gwynne House in 1910 and, over the next twenty years, put up detached houses for boys round it; the chapel of 1932 is by W. H. Godfrey.
Redbridge's character appraisal for the conservation area picks out the housing street by street: Victorian terraces with a stepped roofline on Stoneycroft Road, more Victorian houses on Waltham Road, late-Victorian cottages in Waller Close, a red-brick gabled Victorian parade on Chigwell Road, and interwar terraces and post-war maisonettes further along it. In the census area covering the village core (Redbridge 005B), 287 of 898 households lived in a terraced house in 2021, the largest group, and 71.1% owned their home.

Repton Park, the old Claybury asylum
South-east of the village, G. T. Hine's Claybury asylum was finished in 1893, the first mental hospital completed by the London County Council, built for 800 men and 1,200 women. It closed in 1996. Crest Nicholson converted the ward blocks and added new houses and flats, 770 homes in all, and the estate was named Repton Park for the link with Humphry Repton, who had advised on the grounds of Claybury Hall. In the census area that holds it (Redbridge 006F), 77 of 978 households lived in part of a converted non-residential building, such as a former school, church or warehouse.
The two kinds of home need different planning on the day:
- Terraced house on the village streets
- the van parks in the road, near the door; a built-in single or a freestanding cooker is likely
- Flat in a converted ward block at Repton Park
- Redbridge's 2005 appraisal of Claybury called the estate essentially gated, with security offices in the gatehouses and sunken parking areas screened by seeded squares; ask the building how visitors get in today
The work itself is the same in both. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

Parking in zone WGD round the village
On Redbridge's map the village streets are in zone WGD: Chigwell Road through the village, Green Walk, Waltham Road, Stoneycroft Road, Gainsborough Road and Purleigh Avenue, with permits needed from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The van needs one of your visitor permits in those hours, as it stays parked for the whole visit. The appraisal notes that Sands Way is often lined with parked cars, so if you live there, say so when you book.
Woodford Bridge oven cleaning questions
Is all of Woodford Bridge in Redbridge?
No. The village is in Redbridge's Bridge ward, but further out, Chigwell Road beyond the village, Smeaton Road and Turpin's Lane have IG8 postcodes and are in Epping Forest district, next to Grange Hill.
I live in Repton Park. What do you need from me?
If the gate is staffed, let them know a van is coming. Then give us the building, the floor and where visitors park.
Does a Sunday visit cost more?
No. Weekends are charged at the weekday price, and zone WGD is not controlled on Sundays.

Said after the sign-off
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
