In 1840 the upper end of Wood Street was crowded with mainly timber cottages and shops. Only two timber buildings survived in 1971: a single-storey butcher's shop and slaughterhouse that claimed to date from 1750, and a cottage by the Duke's Head inn.
The Marlowe Road estate, rebuilt
The old Marlowe Road estate was low-rise council flats round the 21-storey Northwood Tower. The council granted planning permission in September 2016 and building started that year with Countryside; the tower stayed while the low-rise blocks were replaced. By February 2026 the scheme had delivered 538 new homes, 115 of them for social rent and 94 for shared ownership. When the last private homes, sold as Feature17, are finished in autumn 2026 there will be 589 homes, 44% of them affordable. The scheme also includes a new Wood Street Library, a Co-op and post office, and a plaza with fountains.
New flats like these often come with a built-in oven under the worktop or in a tall housing, and some ovens are pyrolytic, with a self-clean setting that heats the empty cavity until grease turns to ash. Wood Street ward in the 2021 Census
Wood Street is still a ward, with two councillors since 2022, down from three. In 2021 it had 3,638 households. 43.2% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 33.4% in a terraced house. 29.5% rented from a social landlord, most of them (20.0%) from the council, while 24.3% rented privately and 44.1% owned. Those figures predate the later phases at Marlowe Road.
Housing came later than the street itself: in the 1890s many of the mansions on Wood Street and Shernhall Street were sold for development. Wood Street Indoor Market, at 98-100 Wood Street and run as a market since 1955, opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5.30pm.
