The green and the streets round it have been the Winchmore Hill Green conservation area since 1968. The council's 2015 management proposals describe the Victorian cottages of Wilson Street as modest and attractive, and an Article 4 direction means that on many houses the owner needs planning permission to change windows, doors, roofs or front walls.

Victorian and Edwardian houses towards Grovelands
The railway arrived on 1 April 1871. By 1882 Winchmore Hill had 400-500 houses, with building near the station and along Hoppers Road, Compton Road, Station Road (then Middle Lane) and Wades Hill, and by 1906 there were 1,052 completed houses. Southgate council bought part of the Grovelands estate for a public park, opened on 12 April 1913; the house there, built in 1797-98 to John Nash's design, is listed Grade I.
Winchmore Hill ward is mostly owner-occupied. At the 2021 Census, 69.2% of its 3,999 households owned their home, 31.8% lived in a semi and 11.1% in a detached house. Where one of these houses has had its kitchen extended, there is room for a built-in double or a 90cm range.

Parking in the Winchmore Hill zone
On the council's zone boundary file as archived in December 2022, The Green, Wades Hill and the streets round the station sat in the Winchmore Hill zone, controlled for one hour, 10.30am to 11.30am, on weekdays, with part of Wilson Street controlled from 9am to 6.30pm. South-east of the station, Cedars Road and part of Highfield Road have a zone running 7am to 7.30pm every day from 25 June 2025. The van stays outside for the visit, so a start after the controlled hour helps; check the sign on your street.
