When the London and South Western Railway opened Wimbledon station in 1838, it put it at the bottom of Wimbledon Hill, south-east of the old village, and the town's growth moved away from the village centre.
Terraces round the town centre
Merton's Local Plan describes the town centre as long and linear, set at the foot of the hill and tightly bound by established residential terraces, some inside conservation areas. Shops began to stretch along the Broadway towards Merton after Ely's department store opened in 1876. The streets south-west of the station, such as Graham Road, Kingswood Road and Mayfield Road, are in Wimbledon Town and Dundonald ward, which is where the figures below come from.
Wimbledon Town and Dundonald ward had 5,120 households at the 2021 Census. 32.5% lived in a terraced house and 20.8% in a semi; 17.6% lived in part of a converted or shared house and 23.7% in a purpose-built block of flats. 35.1% rented privately. A flat in a converted house usually has a built-in single or a compact cooker; a whole family house is more likely to have a built-in double or a freestanding range.
Whichever it is, the routine is the same. Dust sheets go down. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with the door split where its design allows.
Bigger kitchens in the Village
Up the hill, the Village is a different place. The Local Plan notes it has no railway station of its own and that its streets are relatively low density, protected by conservation areas. In Village ward at the 2021 Census, 39.3% of households owned their home outright, and more than a quarter lived in a detached house. A big house is more likely than a flat to have a range cooker or an AGA.

Parking near the Broadway and on the side streets
The town centre zones run late. On Merton's town centre zone list, W3 and W4 are controlled Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 11pm, and on Sundays and bank holidays from 2pm to 6pm; Graham Road, Hartfield Road and Herbert Road are in W4. A short walk south, Kingswood Road, Mayfield Road, Sherwood Road and Wilton Grove are in zone 5F, controlled Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6.30pm. The Village has its own V zones, and during the Championships fortnight extra restrictions go up around the High Street and the All England Club, so read the signs in late June and early July. Westward, SW20 runs on towards Raynes Park.

Can you clean an AGA in a Village house?
Yes. A two-oven AGA is £143 and takes about half a day. Switch it off the night before so it is cool when we arrive.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes, seven days a week, and weekends cost the weekday price. On Sundays the W3 and W4 zones by the Broadway are still controlled from 2pm to 6pm.
Do you need anything from me on the day?
A working socket, somewhere for the team to park, and the oven cool when we get there.
