Wimbledon Chase took its name from the station, which opened on 7 July 1929 when the first stretch of the Wimbledon to Sutton line reached South Merton; the rest of the line to Sutton followed in January 1930.
The Whatley estate, south of the station
The fields south of the line belonged to Bakers End farm, owned by the Whatley family. The farm was pulled down in 1920 and Merton and Morden Urban District Council laid out a council estate on its land, centred on Whatley Avenue. Merton's character study for Cannon Hill credits the design to John Sidney Brocklesby and Wallace Marchment, working on garden city lines: two-storey terraces and semis with hipped roofs and carefully detailed brickwork, terraces at two junctions angled to face each other, and Mawson Close set round its own green. In 1926 the council added 100 more homes along Cannon Hill Lane and the extension of Whatley Avenue.
The council set some standards early. In November 1919, John Tarling's history records, it decided that bathrooms would be provided and that all the ground-floor rooms would be on one level. A kitchen in a house of that age has usually been refitted since, and the cooker may be a built-in oven under the worktop or a freestanding cooker in the run of units.
Merton Mansions on Bushey Road
George Blay, who built the Cannon Hill estate, finished his work here with flats. Merton Mansions, at the corner of Bushey Road and Martin Way, was built with 132 flats and a swimming pool, according to John Tarling's history of the area. The council study describes three-storey art deco blocks round a courtyard of parking and grass, brick with Crittall windows on the Bushey Road side and rendered at the back.
In the census area that includes Merton Mansions and houses on Whatley Avenue, 30.4% of the 649 households lived in a purpose-built flat at the 2021 Census, 29.6% in a semi and 29.4% in a terrace. 33.0% rented privately and 16.0% from the council or a housing association. For a flat on the top floor, mention the floor when you call. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking round the Whatley estate
Whatley Avenue, Botsford Road and Mawson Close do not appear on Merton's April 2026 list of roads in controlled zones. Bakers End and Cannon Hill Lane are in zone MP2, controlled Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6.30pm according to Merton's Merton Park zones page. Is Wimbledon Chase in SW19 or SW20?
Both are used. The station end of Kingston Road and the Whatley estate are SW20; Merton Hall Road, north of the station, is SW19. Either way the price is the same.
I rent a flat in Merton Mansions and I am moving out. Can the agency pay?
