Willesden's High Road is a shopping street more than a mile long, from Church End in the west to Willesden Green station in the east, and Brent dates most of it to the quarter century after the Metropolitan Railway's station opened in 1879.
Flats over the shops on the High Road
Brent's conservation area appraisal dates the parades plot by plot, as old country houses were sold: 52 to 64 High Road on the Peacock House estate in 1894, 35 to 43 on the frontage of The Poplars in 1895 and 147 to 151 on the Gowan Lea estate in 1898, each with offices or flats over the shops. The old library, opened in 1894, is mock-Tudor with pargeting and locally listed; its front building was kept when the Library at Willesden Green was rebuilt, finished in 2015.
In the small census area that covers this stretch of the High Road and Linacre Road (Brent 022D), 6.8% of the 1,028 households in 2021 lived in a commercial building, the census category for a flat over a shop or an office. Another 54.8% lived in a purpose-built block and 31.1% in a converted or shared house. More than half, 53.0%, rented privately.
A flat over a shop is often reached by a side or back door and a stair, with the kitchen at the rear. The stairs change the carrying and nothing else. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.
The houses behind the High Road
In 1877 Catherine Nicol sold Bramley's farm to the United Land Company. Within two years it had laid out streets south of the railway on both sides of the High Road and sold the plots to small builders, who put up crowded terraced houses aimed at the lower middle classes. Brent's archive history says that at one point in the 1890s four houses a day were being built, and that the Willesden Brick and Tile Works on Chambers Lane supplied many of the local bricks from 1882 until 1937.
The appraisal calls Heathfield Park, beyond the Walm Lane junction, the earliest residential estate in the area: large town houses and villas, built mostly to plans approved for Knight and Company in 1884. It is inside the Willesden Green conservation area, designated in 1993; in May 2024 Brent's Cabinet extended the area to take in more of the residential streets off the High Road and Walm Lane.
Across Willesden Green ward, 33.0% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house at the 2021 Census and 43.8% rented privately, so the oven is often on an inventory clerk's checkout list. Parking for the van off the High Road
On Brent's zone map the side streets fall into several zones. Stretches of Linacre Road, Huddlestone Road and Lechmere Road are in zone GC; Grange Road and Harlesden Road have stretches in zone GH, and St Andrews Road is split between GH and zone G. Brent's list of zones gives GC and GH the same hours, 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. Heathfield Park, Walm Lane and the nearby end of Willesden Lane are in zone MW, controlled 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Zone G, which covers much of the High Road and some side streets, is not on that list, so read the signs there. GC, GH and MW do not run on Sundays, and Brent's map says bank holidays are free too.

I rent a flat over a shop on the High Road. Is that a problem?
No. Mention the floor and whether the door is at the side or the back. We need a working socket and the oven cool when we arrive.
Is Saturday easier for parking?
In zones GC and GH, yes, because Saturday is outside their hours; zone G is not on Brent's list, so read the signs there. Zone MW, which covers Heathfield Park and Walm Lane, is controlled on Saturdays too, so there a Sunday visit or a visitor permit from you is simpler. Weekends cost the same as weekdays.
Is Willesden the same place as Willesden Green?
The High Road town centre is usually called Willesden Green, after a village green that had mostly gone by about 1910, and Willesden Green has its own page. South of Heathfield Park, the town houses built by 1914 along Brondesbury Park begin.
