Big plots on the valley side
On the western side of the valley the ground rises steeply. The design code in the Caterham, Chaldon and Whyteleafe Neighbourhood Plan describes very large plots on Church Road and the private Portley Wood Road, with houses set deep behind long drives; Salmons Lane as a winding, narrow road slightly below ground level; and lanes such as Waller Lane as very steep. Jacob's Ladder, a long, steep run of steps built in the 1880s on the old way up to Westhall Farm, still climbs from Well Farm Road.

Yellow lines by the station
In Surrey County Council's 2024 parking review, a plan to turn the single yellow lines on Godstone Road, from the Salmons Lane crossing by the station up towards the roundabout, into double yellows was dropped after 14 objections. In Well Farm Road the council went ahead: double yellows on the north side from Godstone Road to the railway bridge, the single yellow on the south side removed so cars can park there, and passing places by the two entrances to Whyteleafe House. Single yellow lines have their hours on a plate, so check it before we arrive and tell us where the nearest legal space is.
