Kneller Road and Whitton Dene, which meet just west of Kneller Hall, are medieval routes, and the few old buildings at their crossroads, the White Hart among them, are what Richmond Council calls the historic core of Whitton.
The old core around Kneller Hall
The court painter Sir Godfrey Kneller bought the house on this site in 1709 and replaced it with a larger one, though the council's 2014 planning guidance for Whitton and Heathfield says the neo-Jacobean look of Kneller Hall dates almost entirely from 1848. It is listed Grade II, and until 2021 it was home to the Royal Military School of Music. Around it the guidance finds Victorian and Edwardian villas and terraces scattered through the area, a late Victorian or Edwardian terrace on Seaton Road, much inter-war and post-war infill, and 1930s and 1940s housing around that terrace in semi-detached pairs and short terraces.
A 1930s suburb with an older mix by Kneller Road
Much of Whitton was built after the station opened in 1930. That year new plans went in for a parade of 45 shops along Percy Road, now the High Street, and the 1930s semis followed across the old market gardens. In the Census area the House of Commons Library calls Whitton, 43.4% of 3,134 households lived in a semi-detached house in 2021.
The streets nearer Kneller Road and Hounslow Road are more mixed. In the small Census area that takes in Bramley Close, Derwent Road and that stretch of Kneller Road and Hounslow Road (Richmond upon Thames 010B), the roughly 650 households split 30.2% semi-detached, 29.7% terraced, 20.4% purpose-built flats and 11.0% in part of a converted house.
