Whiteley Village, south of Walton-on-Thames, is a charitable retirement village of over 250 almshouse cottages, and its homes are only for the people the Whiteley Homes Trust takes in. Elmbridge's housing page sets out who can apply: men from 65 and women from 60, with limited savings and income, a clear housing need and the ability to live independently. The council's 2012 appraisal put the village at the equivalent of 24% of the borough's sheltered housing for rent.
Eight sections around the Whiteley monument
Frank Atkinson won the competition for the layout: an octagon of eight groups of cottages, each round a small green, with eight avenues meeting at a monument to William Whiteley on a circular green. Building began on 21 July 1914, when the Bishop of London laid the monument's foundation stone. The eight sections were shared among architects including Walter Cave, Ernest Newton, Reginald Blomfield and Aston Webb; Sir Ernest George designed two. The first villager, Eliza Palmer, a retired nurse, moved in on 10 October 1917. Chestnut Crescent followed in 1928, and Drapers Crescent and Huntley House in 2003-4.
Small kitchens, on purpose
Size was settled early. In 1913 Walter Cave built two single-storey model cottages on the West Avenue approach, and they were judged too expensive and too spacious for older residents to manage, cleaning included, so the cottages that followed were smaller. The planned accommodation was a living room with an alcove for the bed, and a scullery with a gas stove, a small bath, a sink and a larder.
A century on, a cottage kitchen is likely to be compact, with a built-in single or a small freestanding cooker. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are cleaned by hand on dust sheets. Single oven cleaning takes about 90 minutes.

The Trust owns the village roads, more than 5km of them, and the 2012 appraisal calls Whiteley a "Village Settlement" and says it is neither a gated community nor a patrolled environment. What if I am unwell on the day?
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the visit, so ring as soon as you know.
