Whitefoot Lane was the road here before there was anything else to speak of, and the Downham estate was laid out around it from 1926, the London County Council putting roughly 5,659 houses and 408 four-storey flats across some 522 acres, built out by Holland, Hannen and Cubitts and holding about 30,000 people once it was full.
