In 1935 the London County Council bought part of the old exhibition ground west of Wood Lane, and the White City Estate began going up in red-brick rows in 1938.
The White City Estate, planned for 2,300 flats
The LCC's first plan was 2,300 flats in 49 five-storey blocks for 11,000 people, laid out north to south so each block caught the sun. The war stopped work, and a smaller estate was finished in 1953 for about 8,000. The London Gardens Trust counts 2,037 properties on over 21 hectares between South Africa Road, Bloemfontein Road and the Westway: five-storey balcony blocks with some later towers, and London plane trees that are older than the buildings. At the 2021 Census White City ward had 4,201 households. Of those, 34.9% rented from the council and 10.8% from a housing association, 30.5% rented privately and 21.7% owned their home; 68.0% lived in a purpose-built block of flats. In the census area round EdCity Walk, on the estate itself, 63.5% of households were council tenants.

EdCity and the new homes on Australia Road
EdCity is a partnership between the council and the education charity Ark, announced in May 2019 and built between South Africa Road and Australia Road: a new primary school building, a nursery for 75 children, adult education, offices and 132 affordable homes. The council's EdCity page, as of October 2026, lists the first phase (24 London Affordable Rent homes) as finished in February 2024 and the second phase as finished in November 2025: 108 more homes, of which 9 are London Affordable Rent, 84 shared ownership and 15 intermediate rent, with a nursery and adult education rooms. Zone O parking round the estate
The estate, EdCity and the streets by White City station are in Hammersmith and Fulham's parking zone O, which the council lists as controlled Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and free outside those hours. White City Underground station, on the Central line across Wood Lane, was built in 1947 to a design by A D McGill for London Transport and is on the council's local register of buildings of merit.

Yes. The racks and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the oven is cleaned by hand indoors, and you look at it lit before we leave. Cancelling is free up to 24 hours before the visit.
