The name Whetstone is on record from 1398, so the story that soldiers sharpened their swords on the stone outside the Griffin before the Battle of Barnet in 1471 cannot explain it. Coach passengers were being told the tale by the 18th century all the same.
The coaching village on the High Road
Whetstone grew where the newer road from Highgate joined the older route up Friern Barnet Lane. As late as 1831 most families here were employed servicing the 130 stage coaches that passed the tollgate each day; the gate was removed in 1863. Joseph Baxendale, owner of Pickfords, paid for St John's church in 1832. The Griffin, rebuilt in about 1929, is where the road widens.
Where Sweets Way is today, William Davies opened a nursery in the 1860s, and J. Sweet greatly enlarged it between 1886 and 1914, growing grapes, tomatoes and cucumbers and employing about 100 workers in summer by the 1890s. The county history dates Sweets Way, small houses grouped in cul-de-sacs round lawns, to 1969 on the nursery site. Barnet approved its redevelopment in 2014, and Taylor Wimpey's scheme there has 288 homes, most of them houses.
Church Farm and Myddelton Park, east of Friern Barnet Lane
Across Friern Barnet Lane the houses are later. John Miles built Myddelton Park as a short cul-de-sac before 1882. In 1903 the National Land Corporation bought his land between Friern Barnet Lane and Oakleigh Road, planned freehold houses for prosperous commuters and pushed Myddelton Park through to the lane, but only about 50 houses stood there by 1920. Beside it, Church Farm Estates laid out Church Way, Church Crescent, St James's Avenue and Friary Avenue between the wars, with uniform semis and some blocks of flats, and York Way was still being built in 1935. A far older row stands on the lane: the Lawrence Campe Almshouses, nos. 213 to 227, a row of seven two-storey red-brick cottages of about 1612, listed at Grade II since 1949.
In the Census small area round Church Way and Myddelton Park (Barnet 011B), 56.1% of the 508 households lived in a semi and 35.6% in a detached house in 2021, and 46.2% owned outright, with no mortgage. A kitchen in a 1930s semi may have been refitted since, so the oven might be a built-in double or a freestanding cooker; tell us which when you call.
Dust sheets go down first, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. At the end the oven is reassembled and heated, and you look inside before we pack up.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
