W. G. Tarrant bought the land on St George's Hill in 1911 and sold it under strict covenants, with no house plot smaller than one acre. Building ran, with a pause for the First World War, until the late 1920s, and the estate has been restricted to the public since 1928.
Ranges and AGAs on St George's Hill and in Oatlands
More than 450 properties now stand on the hill, and many of the earliest mansions are in the Arts and Crafts style. Big detached houses are common across the east side of the town too. At the 2021 Census, 43.7% of households in Oatlands and Burwood Park ward lived in a detached house, against 32.6% across Elmbridge, and 78.0% of the ward's households owned their home.
A kitchen planned for a house on an acre is more likely to hold a 90cm range or an AGA than a single oven under the worktop. They are different jobs:

The town centre, from Portmore Park to Old Palace Gardens
The railway reached Weybridge in May 1838, and housebuilding on the old Oatlands estate land was stimulated in part by it. Most of the houses in Oatlands village were complete by 1859. The west side of the High Street filled up in the 1880s, once the Portmore Park estate between the High Street and the River Wey was broken up for building plots. Weybridge's first council houses, 160 of them, went up on the Old Palace Gardens estate between 1923 and 1927.
The town also has more flats and more renting than the borough around it. In Weybridge Riverside ward 29.7% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021. In both Weybridge wards about a quarter of households rented privately (24.5% in Riverside, 26.2% in St George's Hill ward), where the Elmbridge figure was 17.5%. A flat near the station usually means a built-in single, which takes about 90 minutes.

Every type of cooker has one fixed figure, agreed on the phone before the visit, so a double costs £110 in Oatlands and the same up on the hill.
Parking the van in central Weybridge
Elmbridge Borough Council runs the town's car parks. Churchfield Road car park, behind the library, has 199 spaces: up to two hours costs £3.60 and up to three hours £5.30, with charges from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sundays. Baker Street car park, near Springfield Meadows, has 55 spaces at the same rates.
The streets belong to another authority. Surrey County Council enforces on-street parking through its contractor, NSL, and the completed schemes from its Elmbridge parking review 2024 are enforced from 27 July 2026, so a restriction outside your house may be new this summer. If the nearest legal space to your door is some way off, tell us when you book.
Whiteley Village, Downside and the Byfleets
Several places served from this page are not part of Weybridge. Whiteley Village is in Hersham: a charity-run village of more than 250 almshouses for older people, paid for by William Whiteley's 1907 bequest, with over a hundred listed Arts and Crafts buildings. Downside shares an Elmbridge ward with Cobham. Byfleet and West Byfleet are over the boundary in Woking borough. The method and the prices are identical in all of them.

Do you clean on Sundays?
Yes. We work seven days a week, and a Saturday or Sunday costs the same as a weekday. Churchfield Road car park charges on Sunday afternoons too, from noon to 5pm.
How long will a double oven take?
About two hours. A single is nearer 90 minutes, and dust sheets go down before anything is taken apart.
Does someone have to be home?
Someone has to let us in and look at the lit oven at the end. For an empty let, keys can be collected by arrangement and the agent can have photos instead.
