Until his death in 1887, John Samuel Sawbridge-Erle-Drax MP owned the woodland north of the Copse Hill conservation area. Merton's Copse Hill appraisal says his successors parcelled up areas of that land and sold them in the early 20th century, and that the area north of Copse Hill stayed largely undeveloped until the 1920s.
Detached houses north of Copse Hill
Barham Road, Hood Road, Preston Road and Drax Avenue are lined with detached houses. At the 2021 Census, 114 of the 117 households in the output area that includes those four roads lived in a detached house: 97.4%. Nearly half, 47.9%, owned their home outright, and 13.7% rented privately.
The houses are of mixed dates. Drax Avenue and part of Barham Road sit inside the Drax Avenue conservation area, designated in December 1986. No. 2a Drax Avenue, on a sloping site by Copse Hill, is a split-level house of concrete and blockwork designed by Philip Dowson of Arup Associates for the engineer Jack Zunz, built in 1967 to 1969 and listed Grade II in 2013. At the end of Barham Road is Beverley Meads, where Wimbledon RFC has had its clubhouse since the 1987-88 season.
Ranges and AGAs in the bigger kitchens
A large detached house is where a 90cm range or a cast-iron AGA is most likely to be found, and both take longer than a built-in oven. A range is two to three hours on site. An AGA has to be cold before work starts, so it is switched off the night before.

Parking on Barham Road and Drax Avenue
Barham Road, Hood Road, Preston Road and Drax Avenue are not on Merton's April 2026 list of roads in controlled parking zones, while Copse Hill itself falls in zones RPW, VSW1 and VSW2. So there are no zone hours to plan around, though any signs at the road entrance still apply. If there is room on your drive for the van, say so when you book.
