The green here was laid out as a village square in 1257, when Richard de Tilbury was granted a Wednesday market at West Tilbury. The market is long gone and the green is not.
The village stands on the crest of the escarpment
St James' Church and West Tilbury Hall occupy the highest ground, where the land climbs steeply from the West Tilbury Marshes below. The church is 11th and 12th century in origin, listed Grade II*, and it is now a private house rather than a working parish church. Roads are few: Blue Anchor Lane, Rectory Road, Gun Hill, Muckingford Road. Rectory Road took its name from a parsonage a rector made out of a former public house at the Gun Hill corner around 1799, and the village kept a King's Head from about the 1770s.

This is a small place and worth saying so. The last count before the civil parish was abolished in 1936 recorded 444 people, and the village has not grown into a town since, because the land around it is Green Belt and a good deal of it is under equestrian use rather than housing. What sits around the green is mostly large detached houses and converted farm buildings, the sort of kitchens that run a 90cm range rather than a slot-in single. Tilbury town, a mile and a half southwest and downhill, is where the bulk of RM18's kitchens actually are.
