By 1897 there were cottages for cement workers in Flint Street, Essex Road and three other streets on the river side of the Grays to Purfleet road, which is London Road today.
Cement cottages, then the interwar avenues
The cement works were the reason for them. Cement making came to Thurrock in the early 1870s, and the Tunnel works opened in 1874 near Tunnel Farm. It closed in 1976. Tunnel Cottages, off London Road, share the name, and the light-industry estate built in the bottom of the old quarries in 1984 is the Tunnel Estate.
Park Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue came next, between 1920 and 1940. After the war the ward lost homes to industry: between 1951 and 1971 the population of West Thurrock ward fell from 7,216 to 4,779 as new industrial premises replaced some of the older dwellings. Today the homes are a small pocket of streets either side of London Road.
A late Victorian worker's cottage usually has a small back kitchen with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single. Semis from between the wars are more likely to have had the kitchen extended, sometimes with room for a double oven.
Who lives round Park Avenue: the 2021 Census
The census area that takes in Flint Street, Essex Road, Park Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue (Thurrock 022D) had 725 households in 2021. Semi-detached houses were the largest group at 41.7%, then terraces at 28.5% and flats at 24.4%. Almost one household in three (32.6%) rented from the council or a housing association, against 17.7% across Thurrock, while 45.0% owned their home and 19.6% rented privately.

None of West Thurrock's roads is on Thurrock Council's list of permit parking zones; the nearest zones on it are P1 and P2 in Purfleet-on-Thames and the lettered zones in central Grays. Our kitchen is tiny. Is there room for the job?
Tell us when you book. The cavity and the door are done by hand on dust sheets, and the racks and trays are taken out and soaked and cleaned apart. On some teams the van has a heated tank, used when the team can park close; otherwise all of it is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
Is West Thurrock covered as part of Grays?
