On the first Sunday of each month from April to December, the West Norwood Feast street market runs from 10am to 4pm, with stalls at St Luke's church and at West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre. It is volunteer powered and self-funded.
The streets around West Norwood Cemetery
The cemetery's main gate is on Norwood Road, facing the fountain in front of St Luke's, where Norwood Road divides into Knights Hill and Norwood High Street. It opened for burials in 1837 as the South Metropolitan Cemetery, 40 acres landscaped to designs by William Tite, and is one of London's Magnificent Seven; Lambeth bought it in 1965. The West Norwood conservation area, designated in June 1978 and extended in October 2003, is centred on the cemetery and takes in the 19th-century public, commercial and residential buildings next to it.
Before the railway came, the area had villas on the main roads and cottages between Knights Hill and the High Street. The line to Crystal Palace opened in 1856 with a station at Lower Norwood (now West Norwood), and over the next forty years many big houses and their gardens were replaced by more modest streets. The shopping parades on Norwood Road, between York Hill and the station, went up in the decades around 1900.
Plenty of those Victorian houses are flats now. In Knight's Hill ward, which takes in Norwood High Street, 18.8% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house at the 2021 Census. A flat made out of a house tends to have a narrow kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, and a staircase between it and the front door.
Post-war estates and renting in Knight's Hill ward
After 1945 much of the council building here went onto bombed or cleared sites. Lambeth Archives has photographs of the Portobello Estate from 1949 and about 1952, with Lindway Road among its streets: it took the name of Portobello House, which stood there before, and the architects were Howes and Jackman.
Knight's Hill ward had 6,913 households at the 2021 Census. 42.9% owned their home, 31.7% rented from a social landlord (20.9% from the council itself) and 24.3% rented privately, while 38.3% lived in a purpose-built block of flats.
On the stairs of a block the job runs the same way. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets. Parking near Norwood Road and the station
West Norwood is one of the uncontrolled parking areas where Lambeth asked residents about new parking controls between 14 April and 25 May 2025. Its surveys, on 19 to 21 December 2024 and 6 to 8 March 2025, found higher parking stress and significant illegal parking on Knights Hill, Norwood Road and Norwood High Street, and very congested kerbs on unrestricted roads closest to West Norwood station, such as Hannen Road.
In October 2026 the Lambeth project page still showed no decision, so look at the signs at the end of your road. The team needs somewhere to park, so give us the nearest side road when you book.

We live just off Norwood High Street. Is a Feast Sunday a bad day?
It may be busier than usual near you. The Feast runs from 10am to 4pm, with stalls at St Luke's church and the leisure centre, on the first Sunday of the month from April to December, so any other weekend day is easier. Weekends cost the same as weekdays.
Does a flat on one of the estates cost more than a house?
No. The price belongs to the oven. Tell us the block, the floor and whether there is a lift, so the visit is timed properly.
