This corner of Fulham used to be called North End. The builders Gibbs and Flew, putting up some 1,200 houses on market gardens west of the railway, wanted a name that would sell them, and West Kensington stuck; North End Road kept the old one. All of it is in Hammersmith and Fulham, between Hammersmith Road and Lillie Road.
The Fitzgeorge Avenue mansion blocks
In 1897 the western half of the grounds of North End House was sold to the builder Henry Lovatt. He laid out Fitzgeorge Avenue as a cul-de-sac off Auriol Road and filled it with large mansion blocks, each with its own plan, to designs by the architect Delissa Joseph. A stone on Nos. 52 to 70 records that the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Frank Green, opened the avenue on 16 January 1901. The earliest blocks, at the Fitzgeorge Avenue end, rise to six storeys. The blocks went up over some 30 years, moving east into Fitzjames Avenue, and the eight-storey North End House blocks, on the site of the demolished house, date from the 1930s. Hammersmith and Fulham council made the two avenues a conservation area in September 1982.
These were built as flats, and a sixth or eighth floor is a long way up. Tell us the floor and whether the block has a lift when you call. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.
760 council flats east of North End Road
Thaxton Road, Aisgill Avenue, Mund Street and Gibbs Green Close run through the West Kensington and Gibbs Green estates, 760 flats between them. Hammersmith and Fulham council sold both estates to Capital and Counties (Capco) in 2012 for the Earls Court redevelopment, and residents fought demolition for years. In November 2019, after Capco sold its Earls Court interests to Delancey and APG, the council agreed to take the estates back. The 44-acre Earls Court site next door, where the exhibition centres stood, lies partly in this borough and partly in Kensington and Chelsea. Hammersmith and Fulham's planning committee resolved to grant permission for its part on 26 November 2025 and Kensington and Chelsea's followed on 16 December 2025. In October 2026 the developer's planning page still described the Section 106 agreement as under negotiation, with the Mayor of London's stage 2 review to come before the permissions are issued.
The census area that takes in Gibbs Green Close and Mund Street (Hammersmith and Fulham 015D) had 710 households in 2021. Of those, 63.1% rented from the council or a housing association, 19.2% rented privately and 14.8% owned. Nearly four in five lived in a purpose-built block. In a block the lift sets the pace of the carrying.

No. It is in Hammersmith and Fulham, whatever the name suggests. The W14 postcode does cross the boundary, though: some addresses by Kensington (Olympia) station are in Kensington and Chelsea, and those streets are covered on our Olympia page.
I live on an upper floor of an estate block. Does that matter?
