Nos 1 and 2 Warehouse are the last two of nine. George Gwilt and Son built the range between 1800 and 1804, more than half a mile of late Georgian brick put up to hold sugar, rum and tea off the West India ships, and the rest of it went in the bombing of the Second World War. What survives is Grade I listed, with No. 1 Warehouse holding the Museum of London Docklands since 2003 and the upper floors of the range converted to flats that kept the original beams, pillars and girders.
A listed shell and a 32-storey neighbour
Those warehouse conversions have deep floorplates, which means the kitchen often sits away from any external wall and the hood recirculates rather than ducts. Next door, No. 1 West India Quay at 26 Hertsmere Road is 32 storeys and 360 feet, built by Manhattan Loft Corporation between 2002 and 2004 to an HOK design, with 204 apartments and four penthouses stacked above 300 Marriott hotel rooms. Both sorts of home run on the same kitchen: a built-in single electric oven, an induction or ceramic hob, no room for a range.
The tank never comes indoors
That matters in a listed building. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go down to the heated dip tank in the van and soak there, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand at the kitchen with non-caustic products, so nothing corrosive is carried across a Grade I floor and there is no chemical smell left behind. A standard oven clean at West India Quay takes about ninety minutes for a single and closer to two hours for a double.

Do you deal with the concierge?
Yes, and it is worth telling us at the booking which entrance and which lift the technician should use, because a loaded rack tray and a service lift booked by someone else at the same hour do not combine well.
