Around West Heath Road, social housing accounts for about 28 per cent of household spaces, against a national figure of just under 17.5 per cent. Where the name comes from
West Heath House was put up in the early nineteenth century for Sir Samuel Hulse, who served as personal military officer to the Prince Regent, later George IV. The ward sits south of Abbey Wood and north of Welling, and the postcodes run SE2 into DA7 and DA17, so half the neighbourhood writes a London address and the other half writes a Kent-style one.
The hillside just north was built by a co-op
Above Abbey Wood is the Bostall Estate, still called the Co-op Estate locally, over a thousand homes put up by the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society between 1900 and 1914 to designs by their own architect Frank Bethell, with the first brick laid on 28 May 1900 and the roads, sewers and chalk for the bricks all supplied by the Society's own works department. The street names are a manifesto: Rochdale, Owenite after Robert Owen, McLeod, Commonwealth. Lesnes Abbey, founded 1178, sits in the woods beyond.
Getting to you
Abbey Wood station is about 0.8 miles off and has been the south-eastern end of the Elizabeth line since May 2022, which has pulled new tenants across this side of Bexley. Three TfL bus routes link West Heath to Bexleyheath, Erith, Woolwich, Thamesmead and North Greenwich. We drive. The tank sits in the van and takes racks, shelves, trays and side runners; the cavity, fan cover and glass are hand-degreased indoors, non-caustic, no smell left behind. A separate hob clean runs £23–28, which is worth adding in a maisonette where the hob and oven are separate units.
