Semis and bungalows around West Heath Road
Much of the area was built on the grounds of two big houses. West Heath House was built in the early 19th century for Sir Samuel Hulse, aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent, and the dog-leg in Bedonwell Road is where he took in common land to widen his grounds. Lessness Park, an Italianate mansion, had grounds running north to Woolwich Road. In 1930 Edward Blackwell built houses on West Heath Road and added more to the south a year later; he had worked in Australia, which is why there is a Canberra Road. Lessness Park came down in the mid-1930s and its site was built over, mainly with bungalows, leaving a strip of trees on Woolwich Road and the recreation ground that opened in 1937.
West Heath is now a ward of Bexley, and a ward of owners. At the 2021 Census 77.8% of its 5,948 households lived in a semi-detached house, and 83.9% owned their home, 42.6% outright with no mortgage. Only 9.0% rented privately.
A semi that has had its kitchen extended often has room for a double oven or a range cooker, and a bungalow keeps the kitchen on the ground floor. Since the Elizabeth line opened, Bexley has had reports of parking pressure in West Heath, and residents named commuters for Abbey Wood station among the causes; the council's own zone at the station runs 11am to 1pm on weekdays. From 1 December 2025 it put an experimental zone, controlled Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, on Burcharbro Road, Heath View Drive, Milford Close, Westergate Road and parts of Bedonwell Road, West Heath Road and Woolwich Road. Feedback was open until 24 August 2026, and the council says the final decision will be made at some point between 2 June 2026 and 1 June 2027, so the rules may change: check the signs on the day. A weekend visit falls outside the trial hours and costs the same as a weekday; on a weekday, give us the street so we can plan where to park.
