Thomas Potter, whose foundry stood by West End Green from the 1860s, owned 13 acres south of Mill Lane, and between 1882 and 1894 local builders put up 346 houses on it in Sumatra, Solent, Holmdale, Glenbrook, Pandora and Narcissus roads.
Potter's terraces south of Mill Lane
Most were built by local men: J. I. Chapman of Solent Road, G. W. Cossens of Mill Lane, Jabez Reynolds of Holmdale Road and James Gibb of Dennington Park Road. The war took a few: Nos. 76 to 86 Sumatra Road and 9 to 17 Solent Road were bombed and replaced by an open space and a clinic, and a library went up on the corner of Dennington Park Road in 1954.
Many of these houses are still whole. In the small Census area round Solent and Pandora Roads (Camden 010C), 38.3% of households had a terraced house to themselves in 2021, against 8.1% across Camden, and 50.3% of its 577 households owned their home. In a terraced house of this age the kitchen is usually at the back, often in the rear extension, and the cooker may be a built-in double or a freestanding one. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.
Mansion flats along West End Lane
West End Lane itself was lined with flats from the 1890s: Sandwell and Victoria Mansions on West End Lane and Sumatra Road in 1893 and 1894, seven blocks on the old Cedars estate in 1894, and Welbeck Mansions, with their ironwork balconies, on the site of Potter's foundry in 1897. Holmdale Mansions, on Holmdale Road, and Cavendish Mansions, at the east end of Mill Lane, followed around 1904, and Alexandra Mansions took the site of the Cock and Hoop inn by West End Green in 1902.
Closer to the lane, round Holmdale and Inglewood Roads, most homes are rented. In Camden 010B, 60.3% of the 760 households rented privately in 2021, and 51.8% lived in part of a converted house. Weekday parking zones west of West End Lane
Potter's estate, most of Mill Lane and West End Green are in Camden's zone CA-P(a), Fortune Green, controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays only. East of West End Lane, Crediton Hill is in CA-P(b), West End, where the same hours also apply on Saturdays. Tradespeople come under Camden's trade permit, and visitor permits are meant for residents' own guests. On a weekday the team needs somewhere legal to park.
