All Saints, the parish church on Church Street, has stood since at least the 12th century. Its castellated west tower was added around 1400, fragments of Stratford Langthorne Abbey are built into its fabric, and it has been Grade I listed since 1984.
The old village round All Saints
On Rocque's map of the 1740s West Ham village is a cluster of houses round the church, with a few more along West Ham Lane (then Stratford Lane) and Abbey Road (then Abbey Lane). The same map names Vicarage Lane as Ass House Lane, although Jackass Lane, also recorded in that century, seems the more authentic name. Portway, the 'town way', is recorded from the 16th century and linked the village with Upton; where it met Upton Lane and Plashet Lane was Upton Cross. Ham House stood in its park near the Cross, and West Ham Park was dedicated to the public in 1874.
West Ham is still a council ward, and it was the one Newham ward left unchanged when the others were redrawn for 2022. The Boundary Commission turned down a proposal to move West Ham Park into a Stratford ward.
Council towers south-west of the church
Between 1945 and 1965 the borough council cleared and rebuilt several districts, Church Street among them. Off Abbey Road, its Eastbourne Road scheme added two 22-storey blocks, Brassett Point and David Lee Point, with 124 flats each, built by Kirk & Kirk for West Ham County Borough Council between 1963 and 1966.
Council renting is common here. At the 2021 Census, 27.8% of West Ham ward's 5,333 households rented from the council, against 15.6% across Newham, and 9.3% from a housing association; 31.9% rented privately and 29.0% owned. 42.8% lived in a purpose-built block and 34.2% in a terraced house.
The shelves, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Meanwhile, on dust sheets in your kitchen, the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking near the church: Stratford South East
On Newham's zone map, the old village from West Ham Lane past the church to the Eastbourne Road towers is in Stratford South East. Its permit bays are controlled only from 10am to noon on weekdays, but it is one of five zones with event-day rules: when the London Stadium has a match or another event, control runs from 8am to 9pm, bank holidays included. The northern end of Vicarage Lane is in Stratford Central (8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, plus event days), and the western end of Portway is in Plaistow North, with the same Monday-to-Saturday hours. West Ham station, just under a kilometre south of the church, has its own West Ham zone, 9am to 6pm on weekdays, and sits in Canning Town North ward.
