West Finchley station opened on 1 March 1933, built by the LNER with modest buildings, many of its fittings taken from stations in the north of England, to serve the houses then going up between the railway and Dollis Brook.
The 1930s suburb between the railway and Dollis Brook
The Victoria County History calls West Finchley a new suburb of the 1930s, created between Dollis Brook and the railway with its own station from 1933. All building in Finchley in that decade followed the council's limit of 10 houses an acre off the main roads, which left room for front and back gardens. In West Finchley ward, 24.5% of households lived in a semi at the 2021 Census and 19.0% in a terraced house.
A semi of that age was typically planned round a small kitchen with a freestanding cooker, and one that has been refitted may now have a built-in double. The racks, trays and side runners of both cavities come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavities, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Fallow Corner and the flats on Ballards Lane
Fallow Corner, east of Ballards Lane, is a locality on the edge of Finchley Common recorded by 1429. Charles Dickens was said to have written Martin Chuzzlewit at Fallow farm in 1843, and the cottage the clown Joseph Grimaldi leased from 1806 has been identified as Fallow Cottage. The land was sold off in plots from 1902: 126 freehold plots on the Fallow Corner estate, most built on by 1908, and 101 more at Fallow Lodge from 1905. Blocks of flats followed in the 1930s, among them Etchingham Court in 1935 and one on the site of Fallow Cottage after Wood and Wallers bought it in 1939.
Flats dominate Ballards Lane itself. In the small census area round 253 Ballards Lane (Barnet 019C), 67.1% of households lived in a purpose-built flat in 2021 and 53.9% rented privately. A flat in a 1930s block often has a compact kitchen with a built-in single.
