The Frays in Money Lane, a 15th-century timber house faced with brick and listed at Grade II*, is among the oldest buildings near West Drayton Green, a conservation area since 10 November 1969.
Houses south of the station, from 1894
West Drayton station opened in 1838, and most of the early suburban building went up just south of it: Bellclose, Brandville, Warwick and Furzeham Roads and the Parade were laid out between 1894 and 1912. Building then spread south to Church Road and beyond, and the 22-acre Drayton House estate, where Ferrers Avenue was built, had been laid out for building by 1924. Many mean cottages on the Green and in the other old parts of the village were not cleared until 1935, when slum clearance orders led the urban district council to start its Bell Farm estate on the old open field; a second council estate, in Wise Lane, was acquired in 1937.
Bell Farm is still a place of semis. In the Census area round the estate, 52.3% of households lived in a semi-detached house in 2021 and 33.0% in a terrace, and 23.3% rented from the council. A semi of the 1930s was usually built with a freestanding cooker in mind, so the oven may be that kind or a built-in one fitted later.
Drayton Garden Village, on the old air traffic site
The air traffic control centre off Porters Way, once RAF West Drayton, emptied when the last civil and military controllers moved to Swanwick in 2007 and 2008. Hillingdon approved plans for 773 homes, a nursing home, shops and offices on the site in 2010, and Inland Homes opened it as Drayton Garden Village in October 2011.
It is mostly houses. In the Census area that covers the village, 48.4% of the 697 households lived in a terraced house and 31.9% in a semi, with only 13.5% in flats; 6.2% were in shared ownership. Houses of that age usually have a built-in oven, a single or a double, fitted into the kitchen units. West Drayton's WD parking zones
The West Drayton parking management scheme is split into WD zones, and the hours are not the same in each. Zone WD1 bays on Bellclose Road and Zone WD5 bays on Bagley Close need a permit or visitor voucher from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. On North Road, the council proposed in 2025 that new Zone WD2 bays should run from 9am to 10pm every day, weekends included, so read the sign there. Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
