West Croydon station opened on 5 June 1839 as plain Croydon, and it stands on the filled-in terminal basin of the Croydon Canal, which had carried barges up from the Thames until 1836 before the railway company bought the route and drained it. It was renamed West Croydon in April 1851. Every Tramlink route calls there now, along with the Windrush line terminus and Southern trains, in fare zone 5.

Terraces cut into flats, and towers above them
The stock either side of London Road is largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces, a lot of them long since split into one and two-bed conversions, with the newer high-rise rental blocks of the town centre sitting behind. Conversions tend to mean an integrated single oven in a narrow galley. The bigger Broad Green houses often kept the back room, so a double oven in a Broad Green terrace is common enough, at £110.
Surrey Street has been trading since 1276
Robert Kilwardby, then Archbishop of Canterbury, granted the market charter that year, and Croydon Corporation took the street over in 1922 and ran it six days a week. It is a short walk from the station and a bad place to leave a van. Croydon runs lettered controlled parking zones, signed on the way in, and pay-and-display across all of them is cashless through RingGo. We sort the bay out. Where does the actual cleaning happen?
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out to a heated dip tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand at your worktop with non-caustic products.
Will the kitchen smell of chemicals after?
It should not. The caustic soaking is outside in the tank, never indoors.
Is the price different because the town centre is busy?
No. Prices are fixed and quoted on the phone. There is no premium-area surcharge anywhere we go.
How long does a single oven take?
Around ninety minutes. A double is nearer two hours, and it is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
