West Byfleet did not exist until its railway station was built in 1887, and Woking Borough Council's 2003 appraisal of the village-centre conservation areas says many of the first houses near it were soon replaced by shops and commercial premises in the early Edwardian years.
Flats above the Edwardian parades
The parades are in two conservation areas, both designated in April 1992. Rosemount Parade, on the Old Woking Road, went up from 1907 on the grounds of a house called Rosemount. The parade on Station Approach was built before the First World War to designs by W. G. Tarrant of Byfleet. Both are Arts and Crafts in style: two and a half to three storeys under steep tiled roofs, with shops on the ground floor and rooms above that were meant as homes, though many are now offices. At the end of the Rosemount Parade conservation area stands St John the Baptist's church, designed by W. D. Caroe in 1910 and listed Grade II.
Nearly half the homes in the centre are flats. In the census area around Station Approach and Rosemount Parade (Woking 002E), 46.9% of the 1,096 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021, and another 3.1% in a commercial building such as a flat over a shop. 31.2% rented privately.
A flat over a shop often has a stair from a side door and a compact kitchen with a built-in single. The racks, trays and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity and door glass are done by hand in the kitchen. Botanical Place, on the old Sheer House site
Among the newest homes in the village are those at Botanical Place, Retirement Villages Group's scheme on the site of Sheer House, given planning consent on 6 April 2021. It opened in 2026 with 197 one- and two-bedroom apartments, a restaurant and social spaces; the consent also covered a replacement public library, retail units and a public car park. The building has an all-electric energy strategy, with solar panels on the roof, so a hob there should be electric. Hobs are priced by type:
