Brompton Cemetery (SW10 9UG) has its south gate on Fulham Road: 16 hectares designed by Benjamin Baud, consecrated in June 1840 and run today by The Royal Parks. West Brompton straddles the line between Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham, and the SW10 streets on this page, east of the cemetery, are on the Kensington and Chelsea side, in Redcliffe and Stanley wards.
The 1860s streets east of the cemetery
Much of the housing here went up in one building campaign. The Survey of London counts 827 houses and some 72 mews premises leased between 1864 and 1876, south of Old Brompton Road, to the builders William Corbett and Alexander McClymont, a count that includes houses they passed to other local builders. In November 1864 ten more houses on Tregunter Road and Cathcart Road extended both streets westward, the Fulham Road frontage at Nos. 266-306b followed in 1865-9, and Corbett and McClymont suspended payment on 4 May 1878.
Ifield Road, which runs up the cemetery's eastern side, got smaller houses. At the 1871 census its 94 houses held 797 family members, 153 other residents and 29 servants, and more than half of them were already in divided occupation.
Kitchens in houses split into flats
The houses are still divided. In Redcliffe ward, which takes in Ifield Road, Finborough Road and Redcliffe Gardens, 35.5% of the 4,397 households at the 2021 Census lived in part of a converted or shared house and 45.6% in a purpose-built block. Only 11.5% had a terraced house. A flat cut out of a tall 1860s house often has its kitchen in a former back room or the basement, commonly with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, and stairs between it and the street.
Stairs add carrying time. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows. Dust sheets go down before the first shelf comes out.

Parking near Redcliffe Gardens and Ifield Road
On the council's residents' parking map of June 2026, the streets between the cemetery and Hollywood Road have residents' bays controlled from 8.30am to 10pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 6.30pm on Saturdays, with no Sunday hours. While controls run, a visiting van has to pay at a pay-by-phone bay. Outside them, the council says anyone can park free in a residents' bay, and pay-by-phone bays are free on Sundays. My flat is on the third floor with no lift. Should I say so?

What happens at the end of the visit?
The oven is put back together and heated, and you look inside before the team leaves. If a corner is not right, it is cleaned again then.

About two hours on site. A single is about 90 minutes, and a 90cm range two to three hours.
