Wennington Road runs along the edge of the marsh, on the lip of the gravel terrace, and the village, the church and Wennington Hall all stand on it. In 1327 Wennington was the smallest township in its hundred, with 11 taxpayers.
Cottages, The Green and Kent View
Most of the village cottages date from the late 19th century: Laundry Terrace was built in 1891 and Halldare Cottages in 1892. A small estate went up round three sides of a square green: semi-detached council houses finished about 1924, then private houses about 1928. In 1956 the Seven Kings housing association built Kent View, 20 semi-detached houses on the site of Wennington House. Havering's 2024 character study calls the housing relatively scattered, a string of suburban homes along Wennington Road and round The Green, with villa houses elsewhere.
On 19 July 2022, the day the UK's temperature record was broken, a fire affected about 40 hectares of grassland, farm buildings, houses and garages on The Green and Kent View. The London Fire Brigade sent 15 engines and around 100 firefighters. Two detached houses, two semis and two rows of terraced houses were destroyed, and almost 90 surrounding properties were evacuated; there were no reports of injuries.
Renting and owning in the village
The census output area that covers most of the village's postcodes, together with the Coldharbour Lane and Ferry Lane business land to the west, had 128 households in March 2021. Semis made up 42.2% of homes and terraces 28.1%. 59.4% of households owned their home and 30.5% rented privately, nearly double Havering's 15.8%.
