Wembley's parish church, St John the Evangelist on the High Road, was built on a plot given by two sisters, Anne and Frances Copland, and consecrated in 1846, the year Wembley became a parish.
The Copland estate west of the station
George Gilbert Scott and W B Moffatt designed the church in flint with stone dressings, and it has been listed at Grade II since 1979; the road beside it is Gilbert Scott Close. The Coplands' land lay just west of the station. According to the Victoria County History, after the death of General Copland Crawford in 1895 the estate, by then known as Harrowdene, was open to development, mainly by the Conservative Land Company, and by 1897 roads had been laid out on both sides of the Harrow Road. Copland Road, Copland Avenue, Crawford Avenue and Harrowdene Road share their names with it.
Further along the Harrow Road, Wembley Fire Station went up in 1937–39 for Wembley Urban District Council. Its listing, in 2000, notes that many fire stations of the time were traditional; this one is streamlined Moderne in brown brick, with a tall central stair tower.
The House of Commons Library calls the census area round these streets Wembley West. At the 2021 Census it had 3,186 households: 38.1% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 31.4% in a semi and 12.8% in a terrace, and 43.9% rented privately. A house of the 1890s or 1900s is likely to have started with a small back kitchen, often extended since, so the cooker could be anything from a 60cm freestanding model to a built-in double in a tall housing.

Parking west of Wembley Central: zones C and SA
West of the station, Copland Road and Lancelot Road are in Brent's zone C. Further along the Harrow Road, side streets such as Fernwood Avenue and Linthorpe Avenue are zone SA, controlled from 10am to 3pm on weekdays and from 10am to midnight on stadium event days. A few streets, among them Copland Close, Lancelot Crescent and Milford Gardens, have no zone at all, but they are inside the event day area, so on an event day only permit holders park there.
The van has to stay legally parked for the whole visit. Zone lines can run between neighbouring streets, so check the signs on yours; weekends cost the weekday price.
