The first station here opened on 20 July 1837 on the north side of St Albans Road, roughly 200 metres up the line from the platforms in use now, its tracks in a deep cutting reached by a staircase. It closed on 5 May 1858 when the present Watford Junction opened to the south, built to take the new branch to St Albans that runs today as the Abbey Line.
A four-line interchange, not a town centre
Junction is the right word. West Coast Main Line fast trains, the London Overground DC line down to Euston, and the single-carriage Abbey Line to St Albans Abbey all meet at one set of platforms, with around eight million passenger journeys a year passing through. The station was rebuilt in 1909 and overhauled again in the 1980s.
The kitchens are mostly new and small
The land immediately east of the platforms, along Clarendon Road, is being rebuilt tall. The Clarendon alone is a 25-storey block of 168 studios, one and two-bed flats, and the wider scheme adds several hundred homes in buildings of four to twenty-three storeys. That means integrated single ovens under the counter and an extractor that has usually never been touched. Adding the extractor hood in one of the Clarendon Road flats is £28 on top of the oven.
Access is a lift and a loading bay
A tower next to a rail interchange has no kerbside oven parking. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come down in the residents lift, out through the service entrance, and into the heated tank in the van, so tell us the block name and we sort the bay before arriving. Do you need my tap or sink?
No. The tank and the water are both in the van, which is the point in a compact flat kitchen with no spare worktop.
Can you come after a commute-hour let ends?
Yes. We work seven days, so an inventory clean between tenancies fits around a weekend or an evening handover.
Will the flat smell of chemicals?
It should not. Soaking happens outside; indoors the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products.
How long does a single oven take?
Around ninety minutes, closer to two hours for a double.
