Where Warwick Avenue leads up to St Saviour's church, the Victoria County History calls it perhaps the broadest road in London; it was widened to give the new church, consecrated in 1856, a grand approach.
Villas along the avenue
Between 1840 and 1851 John Taft took leases for 14 houses in Blomfield Road or in Warwick Road, now Warwick Avenue. All were stuccoed, and the ones on the avenue were the grander. The avenue still has a mix of detached and semi-detached villas, and Nos. 21 to 25 are a mid-Victorian terrace of three storeys and a basement in yellow-brown brick with stucco dressings, listed Grade II in 1987. The stretch that runs north-west past the church was once Warwick Road West, where the former queen of Oudh was living in 1858.
Whole houses are commoner here than across Westminster as a whole, where 10.1% of households had one. In the census area that takes in the station, the lower end of the avenue, Blomfield Road and Randolph Road (Westminster 007B), 24.1% of the 866 households had a house of their own in 2021: 2.1% detached, 9.1% semi-detached and 12.9% terraced. Another 25.4% lived in a flat made from a converted house. Half the households (49.6%) owned their home, 28.7% outright.

A church rebuilt with flats behind it
The first St Saviour's, a large Gothic church in Kentish rag of about 1855, was pulled down in 1972. Michael Biscoe's brick replacement was finished in 1976, and the plan included a block of flats at the rear of the site; the VCH names the flats Manor House Court, in pale brown brick on an island site. A flat of the 1970s usually has a fitted kitchen with a built-in single or double.
The method is the same in a flat or a villa. Dust sheets go down. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors. The door is split where it is built to come apart.

Stopping near the station
Warwick Avenue station, opened in January 1915 on the Bakerloo line's run from Paddington to Queen's Park, has no building above ground: two sets of steps lead down to the ticket hall. Its planned name was Warrington Crescent. Close by, near the Clifton Gardens junction, stands a cabmen's shelter put up in 1888 by the Cabmen's Shelter Fund, one of the earliest that survive and listed Grade II. On Westminster's resident-bay map (August 2021), two sub-zones meet at the station, C1 and BC1. The council's table from March 2026 gives both weekday-only controls, 8.30am to 6.30pm, and Westminster runs no on-street visitor permits, so a weekday visit means a paid bay for the van.
