Wapping Wall takes its name from the river wall it follows. Breaches were a serious problem until the 1580s, when the wall was strengthened by building a continuous line of wharves along it.
Warehouse flats on Wapping Wall
Tower Hamlets' 2009 appraisal of the Wapping Wall conservation area, first designated by the London Docklands Development Corporation in January 1983, calls it one of London's finest stretches of 19th-century riverside wharves and warehouses. Metropolitan Wharf reaches some 40ft out into the river. Great Jubilee Wharf and New Crane Wharf stand as an unbroken wall of buildings between the street and the Thames.
The London Docks closed in 1968. Artists took over the empty warehouses as studios in the late 1960s and the 1970s, and the buildings were then turned into flats. At the time most homes in the area belonged to the council, and the new private housing came with 40% affordable homes offered to local people. In the Census area around Wapping Wall (Tower Hamlets 027C), 21.3% of households in 2021 lived in part of another converted building such as a warehouse, school or church, and 11.9% in a terraced house.
A warehouse flat often has its kitchen as a fitted run along one wall of a big open room. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand, over dust sheets.
The LCC's Wapping housing estate and its 824 gas cookers
Inland from the river, the London County Council began its Wapping housing scheme in January 1926 on cleared slum streets. By November 1932 it was almost finished, according to the Commercial Gas Company's staff magazine, The Copartnership Herald: 824 flats in twelve blocks named after famous seamen and explorers, including Frobisher, Franklin, Vancouver, Willoughby and Chancellor Houses, around Green Bank, Watts Street and Reardon Path. The council chose gas for cooking, and by then the gas company had installed 824 cookers, one for each flat.
Those 1932 cookers will have been replaced long ago, and what stands in the kitchen now may be freestanding or built in. If the flat is up several flights, mention it when you ring.
