Wandsworth Road starts at Vauxhall Cross and runs south-west to the Queenstown Road junction in Battersea, where it becomes Lavender Hill. Almost all of the road is in Lambeth; Lavender Hill, where it ends, is in Wandsworth. Wandsworth Road station opened in 1863 with the London, Chatham and Dover Railway.
Three pockets of the old road
Lambeth made a conservation area of the road in 2002, but not a continuous one. It covers three separate stretches of 19th-century houses and shops, cut off from each other by 1930s council housing on the south side, post-war blocks on the north side, and the clearances of 1970-74 for South Bank University and Lambeth College. The Springfield Estate and the Larkhall Estate were left outside it. Among the oldest survivors are the listed houses at 553-557 and 571-575, from the 1820s and 1830s, some of the earliest buildings left from the old village of Clapham.
No. 575 is the best known. Khadambi Asalache, a Kenyan poet and civil servant, bought the Georgian terraced house in 1981 and spent about 20 years covering its rooms in fretwork cut from old pine doors and boxes. He left it to the National Trust, which has shown it on pre-booked tours since 2013.
Larkhall Park and the flats around it
Larkhall Park sits on bombed and cleared streets. The County of London Plan of 1951 proposed a park of about 27 acres here; 13 acres had been cleared by 1971, when the project passed to Lambeth, and building started in 1973. Southville Road and Courland Street were lost to it, and the Surprise pub at 16 Southville is the last vestige of the terraces that lined Southville.
Most homes along this part of the road are flats. In Stockwell West & Larkhall ward, 77.2% of the 6,862 households at the 2021 Census lived in a purpose-built block and 9.4% in a converted house; only 6.0% had a terraced house. 48.0% rented from the council or a housing association and 29.9% rented privately.
Many of the Victorian buildings on the main road have a shop below and a flat above, so the oven is often up a flight of stairs. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

Parking either side of the borough line
The road itself is a busy main route, so the van goes in a bay on a side street. The kerb along the road is Lambeth's, but the Wandsworth boundary runs just behind its north-west side in places, so a side street off it can belong to either council.
