Waltham Abbey was the last abbey in England to be dissolved, on 24 March 1540, and the Romanesque nave came through it only because it was already the parish church. Under the choir of the present building lie the flint rubble foundations of a seventh-century wooden church, and a burial associated with them has been radiocarbon dated to between 590 and 690. Harold Godwinson refounded the church in 1060 and is believed to have been brought back here after Hastings.
Richard I granted the market in 1189
It still runs, Tuesdays and Saturdays, in the Market Square where Church Street meets Sun Street. Sun Street is pedestrianised now, and the surviving burgage plots with their lanes running back to the old open yards are what give the conservation area its grain. The Town Hall on Highbridge Street was built in 1904 for the urban district council and is a rare Art Nouveau public building.
Three centuries of powder, then a research site
The Royal Gunpowder Mills worked here for over 300 years before production stopped on 28 July 1945, after which the site carried on as a research establishment, ERDE and then PERME from 1977, until that closed in 1991 and English Heritage surveyed what was left and had it scheduled as an ancient monument. It opened to visitors in 2001. The Greenwich Meridian runs through the town.
Roundhills and Ninefields date the expansion
The parish counted 22,859 people in 2021, and the estates on the outskirts, Roundhills and Ninefields among them, arrived with the growth of the 1960s and 1970s. Stock of that age generally means a fitted kitchen with a built-under double or a freestanding cooker, which is plain work: racks, shelves, trays and side runners out to the heated tank in the van, then cavity, fan cover and door glass degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products. Yes. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go.
Do you clean for end-of-tenancy checks?
Regularly. Where the door design allows it, the glass comes apart so the inner faces get done, and that is where an inventory clerk tends to look first.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
