At the north end of Paradise Street stood the Baker's Entry, a timber building said to have held the abbey bakehouse, and its ancient oven was still in use when the building came down in 1846. The town around it had 22,859 residents at the 2021 Census, counting the whole parish.

Waltham Abbey grew very little between the 16th and the late 18th century. Then the gunpowder mills began to expand in 1787 and needed homes for their workers, and most of the houses built here in the 19th century were small terraced cottages. After the Second World War the urban district council cleared much of that housing, especially south-west of the Market Square. By the early 1960s nearly all the old buildings in Silver Street and Fountain Place had gone, and the area was being laid out with new terraces, blocks of flats and old people's bungalows. Estates followed on the edge of town in the 1960s and 1970s, Roundhills and Ninefields among them; the large Ninefields estate at the east end had its own church, St Lawrence, from 1974.
The council housing still shows in the census. In Waltham Abbey Paternoster ward, 40.0% of households lived in a terraced house in 2021 and 32.0% rented from the council. In Waltham Abbey South West, 39.0% lived in a purpose-built flat.
Council terraces and flats of that period may well have a freestanding cooker or a built-under single. Both are cleaned the same way. Parking for the van near the Market Square
The market still runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the Market Square, under a charter Richard I granted in 1189. The district council's car parks in Waltham Abbey are Cornmill and Darby Drive, both long stay, and the pay-and-display part of Quaker Lane, which is short stay; the tariff set in August 2025 runs Monday to Sunday at all three. Street parking is managed by the North Essex Parking Partnership, which in April 2026 proposed a residents-only parking area outside 1 to 11 Rue de St Lawrence, where visitors had been taking the spaces.
