Duppas Hill, in Waddon, became Croydon's first public recreation ground in 1865, when the Board of Health bought it from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners; the London Gardens Trust records tournaments held there until 1286.
Terraces between Waddon Road and Duppas Hill
The streets just north of the park include Warrington Road, Epsom Road and Benson Road. In the census area round Benson Road, Courtney Place and Waddon Road, which also takes in parts of Warrington Road and Epsom Road (Croydon 024C), there were 725 households in 2021: 38.3% in a terraced house, 22.1% in a semi, 18.9% in a purpose-built flat and 13.9% in part of a converted house. 59.1% owned and 30.2% rented privately.
A terraced house usually has a narrow kitchen at the back with a built-in single or a freestanding cooker, and a flat cut out of one may add a staircase. Neither changes the method. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with dust sheets down first. With three households in ten renting privately, a tenant may book the oven before a checkout, and the invoice can go to the letting agency, with photos for the file if asked.
The Waddon Estate and the airport end
A little over a kilometre south, round Barrow Road, is the council estate. St George's on Barrow Road was built in 1932, to a design by Curtis Green, to serve the Waddon Estate, which the council was building at the time; the church is now listed Grade II. Croydon's 2018 Local Plan lists the Waddon Estate as a character area of council-built housing. Across the whole of Waddon ward, of 7,356 households in 2021, 42.2% lived in a purpose-built flat and 25.3% rented from a social landlord.
The ward runs out to Purley Way and the old airport. Airport House, the terminal of Croydon Airport, opened in 1928 and is listed Grade II*. The estate beyond it, Roundshaw, is in Sutton, and so is Bandonhill to the west.
Parking in Croydon's West zone
The older streets are controlled. On Croydon's map of the West permit zone (dated 2007), Waddon Road, Epsom Road, Warrington Road, Borough Hill, Courtney Place and Duppas Road are all shaded. The council's April 2025 charges notice says Sunday and evening charges on its two-hour bays apply in the Central zone only, which leaves the West zone's two-hour bays without them; other bay types may differ, so read the sign.
