Vigo Village is in Gravesham, but the Vigo Inn on Gravesend Road, the old inn the village is thought to take its name from, stands just over a kilometre west of it, across the borough line in Tonbridge and Malling, with a Wrotham address.
From Nissen huts to a planned village
When the army left in 1946, about 1,000 people, most of whom had lost everything in the Blitz, moved into the empty Nissen huts. The local councils put in lavatories, partitioned the huts into three rooms and charged rent of 7s 6d a week. Erskine Road keeps the name of the officer who commanded 148 Training Brigade from January 1943, and the Stansted local history site records one of the brigade's motor transport garages, behind Vigo School, as the only camp building left.
The housing that replaced the huts nearly took another shape. The first outline permission, in 1962, came with a proposal for 680 dwellings and 44 blocks of flats 75 feet tall; those were turned down, and a different scheme, described as more environmentally friendly, got final permission in 1964. In April 1968 Strood District Council took over the whole site. A caravan park at the east end, where Highview is now, had some of its residents rehoused on a mobile home site at Southfield Shaw in 1969, which let building be finished; the primary school followed in 1972, and the village hall, started in 1973, was held up for years and opened around 1980. Vigo became a parish of its own, carved out of Meopham, on 1 April 2000.
A village of terraced houses
Summed over its six census output areas, Vigo parish had about 780 households in 2021, and 69.7% of them lived in a terraced house; detached houses made up 15.5% and semis 13.2%. Owners were 89.9% of households, and 45.7% were still paying off a mortgage. The population has drifted down, from 2,201 in 2001 to 2,005 in 2021.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
