Vigo sits in chestnut woodland at the top of the North Downs with Trosley Country Park immediately south, and the whole village stands on a disused Second World War army camp. Erskine Road is named after the commanding officer of 148 Training Brigade from January 1943. A concrete platform and an assault course wall are still there, and an original motor transport garage survives behind the school.
Squatters started it, a developer finished it
Around a thousand people who had lost everything in the Blitz moved into the abandoned Nissen huts after 1946. The huts were partitioned into three rooms and the rent was seven and six a week. There was a parade of shops the residents called Piccadilly Circus and a row of surgeries they called Harley Street. Croudace Ltd bought the land from a Mr Shahmoon for a reported £65,000, and in 1964 Kent County Council took the site on, passing 150 acres to Trosley Country Park.
The village went up in roughly one decade
First planning consent came in 1962. The first resident moved into Timberbank on 15 October 1965, with the official opening at Easter 1966. Strood District Council took the site over in April 1968, the school opened in 1972, the village hall the year after, and the Villager on Erskine Road not until 1985. One developer, one stretch of years, so the housing is consistent in a way most Kent villages are not, and kitchens of that vintage tend to have been refitted at least once with a built-under single oven and a separate hob. Vigo is one of the few places round here getting smaller
The 2011 census put the parish at 2,065 people, down from 2,201 in 2001. The civil parish only exists from 1 April 2000, carved out of Meopham. Its name comes from a 15th-century pub renamed in the 18th century after the Battle of Vigo Bay.

In the van. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in a heated tank out there, so the caustic side of it never comes indoors.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
