The Metropolitan line first reached Uxbridge in 1904 at a terminus on Belmont Road. That station closed in 1938, when the present one opened opposite the market house. Further houses on the north side of the town were built in 1865-70.

Uxbridge Common, once known as Northolt Common too, covered about 200 acres and ran on into Harefield parish. When the parish was enclosed (the Act was passed in 1812 and carried out in 1825) only 15 acres were kept as open space, on the west side of Park Road. Before that, a few plots had already been taken off the common for country houses: Blue House, or Belmont, west of the Harefield road, probably dates from the late 17th century.
Detached houses are the commonest home here. In the Census area that takes in Gravel Hill, North Common Road, Belmont Road and part of Harefield Road, 48.5% of the 769 households lived in a detached house in 2021 and another 19.2% in a semi; 22.2% were in purpose-built flats. Owners made up 77.0% of households, and 42.4% owned outright.
Larger detached kitchens are where range cookers and double ovens tend to be fitted. Whatever the cooker, the routine is the same: dust sheets down, racks and trays out for a separate soak and clean, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass degreased by hand indoors. Parking on the Harefield Road side of Uxbridge
Hillingdon's March 2026 map of parking management schemes shades the whole block of streets round Uxbridge Common, from the town centre up towards the A40, with Stop & Shop bays on the edge of the town centre. The scheme is called Uxbridge North and its zones keep different hours. In the council's traffic-order papers the Zone U1 bays, which take in Belmont Road and Harefield Road, run Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, while the few Zone U7 bays beside the Common (Colnedale Road, North Common Road and West Common Road) were set at Monday to Friday 11am to midday in the 2022 papers. The council says its permit bays need a resident's permit or a visitor voucher in the hours on the sign, so the sign is what counts.
Evenings are a different problem. At a council petition hearing in February 2022, residents of the town end of Harefield Road said they often could not park outside their own houses once the scheme's hours had ended, and the Cabinet Member asked officers to add a review of those hours to the programme for informal consultation. For a daytime visit, a visitor voucher or an off-street space close to the door gives the team somewhere to park.

Is Uxbridge North still a ward?
No. It was a council ward until the boundary changes of 2022; the streets round Uxbridge Common are now in Uxbridge ward. The Hillingdon page lists the areas we cover in the borough.
How long does a range cooker take?
Two to three hours for a 90cm range, about two hours for a double oven and about 90 minutes for a single.
What should I have ready for the visit?
The oven switched off and cool, and a working socket nearby. Dust sheets go down first, and you look inside the lit oven before we pack up.
