The Grand Junction Canal was dug across Uxbridge Moor from May 1793, and between 1830 and 1850 gas-works, oil mills and mustard mills went up beside it. The Moor itself had been common land, about 100 acres west of the Frays River and south of the town.
Streets between the Frays and the canal
Houses followed the mills. By 1864 a straggling suburb ran along Rockingham Road and Waterloo Road and spread into the triangle formed by St John's Road and Cowley Mill Road. Between the wars the council laid out Austin Waye and Frays Waye, and finished more housing in Church Lane, Cowley Mill Road and Rockingham Road before 1939. In 1946 it opened a 26-acre industrial estate on Cowley Mill Road, between the canal and the Colne, on the site of the old sewage works.
Two Census areas show the difference in 2021. Round Austin Waye, 57.5% of the 546 households lived in a semi and 55.6% owned their home. Round part of Waterloo Road, St John's Road and Culvert Lane, 40.5% of 783 households were in purpose-built flats, and only 39.6% owned; a third rented privately and almost a quarter were social tenants.
Interwar council semis were often planned for a freestanding cooker, and flats often have a built-in oven; both are cleaned the same way. Racks, trays and side runners come out for a separate soak and clean. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with dust sheets down first.
Conservation areas by the water
The canal frontage round St John's Road and Culvert Lane became the Uxbridge Moor conservation area in 2003. Rockingham Road crosses the Frays at Rockingham Bridge, once called Moorfield Bridge and rebuilt in brick with three arches in 1809, and the area round it was made a conservation area in December 2012.

Parking either side of the canal
Hillingdon's March 2026 map of parking management schemes shades the streets between the Frays River and the canal. West of the canal most roads are unshaded. Waterloo Road south of Austin Waye has Zone U6 permit bays, which the council's 2022 order papers give as Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Elsewhere the council says its permit bays take a resident's permit or a visitor voucher during the hours on the sign, so check the plate on your street.
