Upton was a village in West Kent when William Morris bought an orchard and meadow here and had Red House built, and that is the reason the name survives on the map at all. Philip Webb and Morris co-designed it in 1859, it was finished in 1860 at a cost of about £4,000, and it stands on Red House Lane as a Grade I listed building. Morris lasted five years. He sold up in 1865, partly because the daily journey in and out ate three to four hours, and the house stayed private until the National Trust took it on in 2003.
Upton Road runs the length of it
Upton Road carries the DA6 8L postcodes and the housing along it is heavier than the Bexley average, with detached and semi-detached houses on decent plots rather than flats. Upton Primary School sits on it and Townley Grammar is a couple of hundred yards away, which keeps the road busy at the school run and makes mid-morning the easier slot for us. Bexley station is about three quarters of a mile off.
Bigger houses, bigger cookers
Detached stock on wide plots tends to mean kitchens that have been extended rather than squeezed, and where a kitchen has been opened into the back of the house the fit is often a 90cm range or a built-in double rather than the single under-counter oven you find in a flat. Both are ordinary work for us. A double oven on Upton Road is £110 and takes roughly two hours, while a 90cm range is £114.
The tank stays in the van
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van, so the fumes never come inside. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are hand-degreased with non-caustic products. The oven is heat-tested before we sign off. Prices are fixed on the phone and DA6 carries no surcharge.

I have an AGA. Can you do it?
A two-oven AGA is £143. It is a different job from a domestic oven and we allow for that in the booking.
Do you need to move the cooker out?
Usually not. A freestanding cooker sometimes needs easing forward to reach the sides, and we will ask first.
How much notice do you need for a Saturday?
