Red House Lane Conservation Area, designated by Bexley on 25 July 1973, is the most historic part of Upton: Red House, the row of Hogs Hole Cottages at Nos. 1 to 9 Red House Lane, and No. 44 Upton Road.
A hamlet among the 1930s streets
Until the mid-19th century this was farmland round the small hamlet of Upton. Red House, designed in 1859 as Philip Webb's first commission for William Morris, stands in its own grounds; it is listed Grade I, the well-head south-east of the house is Grade I too, and the National Trust runs the house. Hogs Hole Cottages are late-19th-century cottages in render and slate, set back behind picket fences. The council's appraisal says development spread along Upton Road in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and that everything was then engulfed by the suburbs of the 1920s and 1930s; a small un-tarred lane of Victorian origin still survives on the east side of Upton Road, opposite Red House Lane.
Older buildings survive in the gaps. No. 8 Upton Road, said to date from 1856, is a one-storey cottage orné in yellow brick under a thatched roof, listed Grade II. On Mount Road, the Royal Oak is an early 19th-century weatherboarded pub, also Grade II, nicknamed Polly Clean Stairs after Mary Ann Elms, the landlord's second wife, who washed the front steps every day and ran the pub until 1894.

The census area (Bexley 020C) that takes in Red House, parts of Upton Road and Mount Road, and Grosvenor Road and Olron Crescent had 601 households at the 2021 Census. Half of them (50.4%) lived in a semi, 29.6% in a terrace and 13.1% in a detached house; only 4.8% lived in a purpose-built flat. 78.8% owned their home, 36.3% outright. A 1930s semi or terrace tends to have its kitchen at the back, and where that has been extended there may be room for a built-in double; a 19th-century cottage tends to have a smaller kitchen.

Parking on Upton Road and Red House Lane
Upton Road, Red House Lane and Grosvenor Road do not appear on Bexley's list of controlled parking roads (checked 4 October 2026). The Mount Road on that list is in the Crayford Station zone, and Upton Road South is in the Bexley Station zone; neither is Upton's road. The council still tells drivers to read the local signs, and so do we. The team needs somewhere to park.
