The Sydenham Hill conservation area
Lewisham designated the conservation area in 1976 and describes three character areas in it. Mount Gardens is on the site of the original Sydenham Common, enclosed some time between 1810 and 1820; its first houses appear to date from about 1833, and it has unmade roads on three sides. Mount Ash Road is a set piece of identical three-storey byelaw terraces, one on each side of the road. Lammas Green is a 1950s City of London scheme, three terraces round a village green with two blocks of flats behind, listed Grade II in 1998. The area also takes in several Victorian mansions along Sydenham Hill, which the council describes as rather ostentatious.
The hill had its own station once. Upper Sydenham, on the line to the Crystal Palace, opened in 1884 and closed for good on 20 September 1954; its old booking office survives as a house on Wells Park Road.

The census areas either side of the line are very different. On the Lewisham side, round Eddisbury House and Wells Park Road (Lewisham 028C), 76.4% of the 589 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 53.5% rented from the council or a housing association. Across the road in Southwark (Southwark 033A, Crescent Wood Road), 16.7% of households had a detached house, 48.6% lived in a purpose-built block and 61.0% owned their home.
So the oven on this hill might be a built-in single in a block kitchen or a range in a big Victorian house. The method does not change. Racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Parking on the hill
Lewisham's parking map shows no controlled zone on Sydenham Hill, Wells Park Road or Kirkdale; the nearest is zone C at Forest Hill station. The council's 2025 parking consultation covered Forest Hill and Sydenham, and its analysis is not finished. On the Southwark side the rules are Southwark's. Either way, check the signs, and tell us the road, because the team needs somewhere to park.
