Church Road runs along the Norwood Ridge, and Croydon's appraisal of its conservation area dates many of its grand villas to the 1850s and 1860s, after the Crystal Palace was rebuilt nearby in 1854.
Church Road's villas, many now flats
Croydon first designated the Church Road conservation area in January 1974 and has widened it five times since, most recently in July 2015. The council's own description is that many of the large houses have been divided into flats. Later building went onto land that once belonged to older houses: Copper Close, fifteen houses packed onto small plots in the 1980s, and Tree View Close and Southolme Close on the gardens of the old All Saints vicarage. The Queens Hotel, built in 1853-4 to designs by Francis Pouget and extended since, is a landmark on the road, four to six storeys high.
The census area around Church Road and the Croydon side of Fox Hill (Croydon 001A) had about 970 households in 2021. Just over half (51.9%) lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 14.9% in part of a converted house; 59.7% owned their home and 26.0% rented privately.
The kitchen follows the house. A villa divided into flats tends to have a modest kitchen in each flat with a built-in single, while a villa still in one piece may have kept a big kitchen with a 90cm range or an AGA. Fox Hill, on the Croydon and Bromley line
Fox Hill runs downhill east from Church Road along the borough boundary. Its south side is in Croydon's Church Road conservation area; its north side is in Bromley's Belvedere Road conservation area, designated in April 1973. Numbers 12-14, a locally listed pair of yellow-brick houses, are in Camille Pissarro's 1870 painting of the road, now in the National Gallery.

Parking on Church Road and Fox Hill
Croydon and Bromley each run their own side of Fox Hill, so the parking rules can change across the road. Bromley posts its zone times on signs at the entrance to each zone, so if your street is in one, that sign gives the hours. On a sloping road like Fox Hill the house number helps us find somewhere to park, so give it when you book.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
