The village round the green
Spelthorne's 2024 appraisal of the Upper Halliford conservation area dates the oldest buildings to the 18th century: the core of the Goat Inn, and Halliford Manor, once called Clock House. Halliford House followed in 1803, and St Andrew's Church around 1900. Alongside them are humbler homes, such as the cottages at 29 to 35 Upper Halliford Road and the plain brick row at 66 to 70 that belonged to Grange Farm.
The 1962 Victoria County History describes the land round the village as mostly open, with large pools left by gravel digging and many market gardens and glasshouses, though new building was going up around the village. The appraisal shows estates going up round the green between 1934 and 1961, four pairs of mid-century houses on the west side of Upper Halliford Road, and, after 1961, Home Farm Close, built once the old farmsteads on the west side of Upper Halliford Road were lost. The railway halt to the north opened in 1944.
Spelthorne 011C, the census area round the green and Home Farm Close, had 637 households at the 2021 Census; 28.9% lived in a detached house, 36.6% in a semi and 16.2% in a purpose-built flat, and 18.8% rented from a council or housing association. Getting the van into Upper Halliford
The Halliford Bypass cut Charlton Lane in the later 20th century, so there is no way into the village from the west. The van comes in along Upper Halliford Road from the north, Halliford Road from the east or Gaston Bridge Road from the south. Opposite the green, the wide strip beside the road is used for parking today, according to the appraisal; check the signs before relying on it. Racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors.
