Upper Halliford station opened as a halt on 1 May 1944, put there by the Southern Railway for the Windmill Road industrial zone and the British Thermostat Company factory then making munitions. A second platform followed in May 1946. The station is 17 miles and 34 chains out of Waterloo, and South Western Railway runs two trains an hour off-peak.
The village was one long road until the 1950s
Upper Halliford kept a linear layout along what looks like a medieval droving route, and the A244, dual carriageway in places and single in others, now takes some traffic around it. Upper Halliford Road and Windmill Road only gained weight after Walton Bridge went up in 1750, when Gaston Bridge over the River Ash, standing since at least the 15th century, was rebuilt to suit. Very little new building happened until the 1950s, because gravel-working had left large pools around Upper Halliford and Charlton and the rest was market gardens and glasshouses.
Post-war infill sets the kitchen width
What went up after the gravel pits and the glasshouses gave way is mostly post-1950s housing, and because that stock was built to a standard kitchen width rather than around a farmhouse chimney, the work here is usually a freestanding cooker or an integrated single under the counter rather than a range. The 2011 census counted 3,173 people across 2.20 square kilometres.
