A plaque on the side wall of 183 Fore Street marks the site of the Angel Inn, where the Stamford Hill Green Lanes Turnpike Trust met between 1713 and 1826.
Fore Street, from Angel Place to the 1890s terraces
Upper Edmonton grew where Fore Street meets Silver Street. The Victoria County History counts 88 houses in the Fore Street ward in 1664 and 611 in 1851, and says fashionable residents settled along Fore Street in the 18th century. Angel Place, the mid-18th-century row at Nos. 183 to 191 and 195 Fore Street, is listed Grade II: three linked brick blocks of two storeys and an attic under mansard roofs, with Doric doorcases. The later Angel pub at No. 181 was knocked down in the late 1960s for work on the North Circular, but the shops round the junction are still called the Angel.
Trams came along Fore Street in 1881, and the Victoria County History says growth was most striking in this part of the parish in the late 19th century. Large-scale building, mostly of terraced houses, took place north of Silver Street and westward and eastward along Silver Street and Angel Road in the 1880s and 1890s. Houses of that date usually had small rear kitchens; today the cooker in one is typically freestanding, or a built-in single put in at a refit.
The Joyce Avenue and Snells Park estates
The two council estates south of the Angel are due to be rebuilt. In a 2021 ballot, 78.5% of votes on the Joyce Avenue and Snells Park estates backed redevelopment, and the scheme plans more than 2,000 new homes with a park; the council's cabinet approved a compulsory purchase order for the first phase in September 2025. The council says the new homes will go up before residents have to leave the old ones. The existing blocks include Boundary Court on Snells Park, built with nine storeys and 48 flats.
In a block, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors. A single takes about 90 minutes.
Three tenures, almost equal
Upper Edmonton ward had 5,581 households at the 2021 Census, split almost evenly: 33.6% owned their home, 32.9% rented privately and 31.9% rented from the council or a housing association. 35.6% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 33.2% in a terraced house. Parking on Tottenham Hotspur event days
Upper Edmonton sits just north of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Enfield runs a South Edmonton zone that applies only on event days, from noon to 9pm. On the council's zone boundary file as archived in December 2022, it took in Joyce Avenue, Colyton Way, Snells Park, Fore Street and the streets round the Angel and Silver Street station. On other days those streets had no zone on that file. Check the sign and the stadium's event dates, because the van stays outside for the whole clean.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
