The line between Upper and Lower Clapton is Lea Bridge Road, and it has been since about 1800, when the manorial courts started naming the parts north and south of it separately. Upper Clapton is the northern half of the E5 district. Springfield Park sits on its eastern edge, made in 1905 out of the grounds of three private houses, one still standing as the park cafe, and opened to the public on 5 August 1905. It covers 14.73 hectares and drops from the high ground at Stamford Hill to the towpath of the Lee Navigation.
Villas at one end, estates at the other
Clapton Common runs down the west side, a long leafy strip whose east and west sides were built up by the late 18th century and which has been a conservation area since 1969, one of Hackney's first four alongside Clapton Square, Clapton Pond and Clissold Park. The larger Victorian villas cluster near the Common and towards the Lea. The other half of the picture is post-war council building: the Chatsworth estate, the Keir Hardie estate at Springfield, and the LCC's Nye Bevan estate with its twelve-storey tower from 1964. The Stamford Hill end changes the maths
Upper Clapton runs up to Stamford Hill, where the Charedi Orthodox community numbers roughly 30,000 people, the largest in Europe, and where households are typically large and often intergenerational. Does the tank come into my kitchen?
No, it lives in the van. Only the racks, shelves, trays and runners leave the flat.
What about the smell? I have children at home.
Nothing caustic is used indoors. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, and there should be no chemical smell once we have gone.
Can you clean a range cooker as well as the oven?
Yes. A 90cm range is £114 and a two-oven AGA is £143, quoted on 020 8077 5225 like everything else.
Is a Sunday possible?
