Upminster Bridge is named after the crossing of the River Ingrebourne on Upminster Road, and the river was for centuries the boundary between the parishes of Hornchurch and Upminster.
A station on the old parish line
The Victoria County History of Essex notes that the upkeep of the Ingrebourne bridges fell to Upminster alone, because Hornchurch, as part of the Liberty of Havering, won exemption. It also records a Bridge House here in 1375, on the ground now taken by Hornchurch Stadium on Bridge Avenue. District trains had run regularly to Upminster since 1932, and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway added Upminster Bridge station on 17 December 1934: a polygonal building by William Henry Hamlyn, which Havering has put on its local heritage list.
The homes round it are mostly semis. In the census area the House of Commons Library names Upminster Bridge, 56.4% of the 3,455 households lived in a semi in 2021 and 18.9% in a purpose-built flat. Most owned (75.4%), and 18.5% rented privately, a little above Havering's 15.8%.

Parking near Upminster Bridge station
Havering's charges list places two sets of pay bays at Upminster Bridge, on Highfield Crescent and Minster Way. Both are charged from 8am to 6.30pm, with a three-hour limit and no return within two hours, and both are free on Sundays. It straddles the two. The station and Highfield Crescent are on the Hornchurch bank, while Bridge Avenue and the stadium, across the Ingrebourne, were in the old Upminster parish and have RM14 postcodes. Hornchurch has its own page.
How long does a range cooker take?
Two to three hours for a 90cm range. It is reassembled and heated at the end, and you look inside before we pack up.
